Valigia parto per l'ospedale: quando prepararla e cosa mettere dentro (La guida completa)

The arrival of a baby brings a whirlwind of intense emotions, anticipation, and... a great deal of planning. One of the most common questions asked during the final months of pregnancy is: when and how should I pack my hospital bag?
Getting a head start is the key to approaching the big day with peace of mind and avoiding last-minute oversights. In this guide, we look in detail at when to start packing, what the mother needs, and all the essentials for the newborn, organized by outfit changes.
1. When should you pack your hospital bag?
The general rule is to avoid leaving it until the last minute, but also not to start too early and live with constant anxiety.
 * The ideal time to start packing the bag is around the 34th to 36th week of pregnancy.
 * By this stage of the pregnancy, the nursery is likely almost ready, and you will have plenty of time to wash the baby's first clothes and organize the outfit changes.
A smart tip? Divide the bag into two sections or prepare separate pouches for each day, labeling them clearly (e.g., "Day 1 Outfit," "Day 2 Outfit," etc.). This prevents your partner (or you) from frantically rummaging through huge bags during the hectic moments of your hospital stay.
2. What should the mother pack?
The average postpartum hospital stay lasts 2 or 3 days (slightly longer for a C-section). Prioritize comfort.  * Clothing: 2 or 3 nightgowns or pairs of pajamas that open at the front (essential for breastfeeding), a lightweight robe, cotton socks (it is often cool in the hospital), and a comfortable pair of slippers (plus a pair for the shower).
 * Underwear: Disposable or elastic mesh postpartum briefs (highly breathable) and nursing bras.
 * Personal hygiene items: Maxi postpartum sanitary pads (highly absorbent), gentle intimate wash (chlorhexidine or calendula-based recommended), toothbrush, toothpaste, and neutral shower gel and shampoo.
 * Documents: Health insurance card, ID card, and your complete medical file containing the test results from the nine months of pregnancy.
3. The newborn's layette: what do you really need?
Most hospitals require you to organize the newborn's outfits into breathable bags or pouches—one for each day of your stay (usually, you should pack 3 or 4). Each bag should contain:
 * A bodysuit or undershirt (preferably pure cotton or lightweight wool, depending on the season).
 * A one-piece outfit that is easy to put on (preferably with front buttons or snaps).
 * Matching socks or booties.
 * A lightweight blanket for the hospital crib. Please note: Always check the specific list provided by the maternity ward where you will be giving birth, as some facilities supply diapers or certain bath products, while others require parents to bring everything needed, including changing supplies and barrier creams to protect the baby's bottom.
4. Don't forget the journey home!
While planning for your hospital stay, remember to organize your departure as well. You will need a final, slightly more substantial outfit for the newborn—appropriate for the season—and, above all, an approved car seat (Group 0+ or infant carrier) that has been correctly installed and tested in your vehicle to ensure maximum safety right from the very first trip home.
